Santa Clarita Valley Community Center Project
In the fall of 2007, the Special Children’s Art Foundation will implement two additional mural projects thanks to a generous grant from the City of Santa Clarita. These murals will involve students from Bridgeport Elementary School, La Mesa Junior High School and Sierra Vista Junior High School. The first mural will be installed in the Santa Clarita Valley Community Center in Newhall, California. The second mural is slated for the City of Santa Clarita ’s

Activities Center. Each mural project involves four to six months of preparation – including initial development of the artistic concept, the drafting and approval of mural comps, the arranging of in-kind gifts and supplies, creation of a final line drawing, recruitment of volunteers and promotion of the painting event. The following images show our progress to the final approved design for the Community Center mural project.

This image was a quick composition of ideas designed in Photoshop from information recieved from Phil Lantis, Arts & Events Coordinator with the City of Santa Clarita. The image depicts some of the programs offered at the Community Center.

The composition is then translated into a line drawing then submitted to the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services as well as the adminstrator at the Community Center for approval.

A couple of changes were made at the City's request in order to capture a better depiction of the programs offered at the Center. This sketch has now been approved by the City.

The final color composition for the mural is complete.

On Wednesday October 10, and Friday October 12 2007 the "Community In Action" mural was prepared by 8 students from Sierra Vista junior High School. Each student aided in outlining each shape with the appropriate color, while they earned community hours for various classes or for the honor society. We want to thank these volunteers for taking time after school to help us!

La Mesa Junior High School kicked off the painting sessions on October 15-16, 2007. Approximately 104 students participated in the session working together to create the 8' X31' mural.

"All students involved fostered friendships and became a cohesive, purposeful unit." - Ana Dwork - Assistant Principal
