Annual Geffen Playhouse
Special
Children’s Art Foundation’s ART GALA 2008 –
An Evening of Art and Music
In association with the Geffen Playhouse, the Special
Children’s Art Foundation (SCAF) hosted ART GALA 2008 on
Monday, May 19th. The event was a tribute to the artistic expression
of special needs children and raised over $75,000 – nearly
three quarters of the agency’s operating budget!
ART GALA 2008 generated incredible support for SCAF from sponsors
and donors such as Warren Beatty, Allen Grubman, Arianna Huffington,
Vicki & Jimmy Iovine, Jeffrey and Marilyn Katzenberg, Miky
Lee, Steve Martin, Wendi Murdoch, Max Mutchnick, Walter Parkes
& Laurie MacDonald, Lynda & Steward Resnick, Cynthia Stafford,
and Tom Unterman. Corporate and foundations donors included the
Ariel Capital, the Carole and Bob Daley Foundation, Dreamworks
Studios, the Nora Ephron and Nicholas Pileggi Foundation, and
Gavin deBecker and Associates.
In addition to corporate sponsorship and ticket sales, the event
raised funds through a silent auction of items donated by Apothia,
Fred Segal, the Malibu Beach Inn, Four Seasons Hotels, the Geffen
Playhouse, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and Vincenti
Ristorante, and original art and jewelry from a number of artists
such as Jhina Alvarado, Frank Armitage, Justice Bodan, Myra Burg,
Barbara Markoe, and Esther Montagner. The silent auction also
made available for the first time the framed sketches, mural composition
style guides, and oil renderings by Nicole Armitage from mural
projects completed by SCAF.
The funds raised through this successful event will support mural
projects planned for 2008 and 2009 and will contribute to our
agency’s capacity building efforts.
Thank you all for your generous support of this event and a special
thank you to the entire staff of the Geffen Playhouse, Apropos
Floral & Events, Baked It Myself, Ronen Levy Events, Wine
Etc.com and Keyboard Concepts.

Santa Clarita
Valley Activities Center
This year we have two murals scheduled. In the Winter/Spring 2008
we will complete the third in a series of murals designed for Santa
Clarita Valley (North Los Angeles County) neighborhoods. This mural
will involve various schools from the William S. Hart School District
and the Saugus School District. The completed mural will be installed
at the George A. Caravalho Santa Clarita Sports Complex. This 14
foot by 37 foot mural will depict images of sports and recreational
activities available at the Complex such as swimming, yoga, volleyball
and skateboarding.
Carousel Ranch
This project was recently developed as small mobile mural
components that could travel to special events in the community
and raise awareness. Our staff and volunteers set up a promotional
booth at special events relevant to our service population - such
as Special Olympics and Autism Speaks (a fundraising walk). The
small, mobile mural component provides youth with and without special
needs attending these events a small taste of what participation
in a mural project is like. These events provide us a forum to distribute
brochures and educate community members on the availability of our
services. When completed, these smaller mural components can also
be put on display at therapeutic and service agencies throughout
Los Angeles County to raise public awareness of our efforts.
Kentwood Elementary School, Westchester, California
In the Fall of 2008, the Special Children's Art Foundation will
bring its socially-inclusive, school-collaborative mural program
to Kentwood Elementary School in the Westchester/LAX area and will
also involve local students attending Orville Wright Junior High
and Westchester High School campuses. We plan to partner with students
from the Otis College of Art and Design to develop the design for
the Kentwood project. |
